In this study, we present the measurement results of the
client-side power consumption for 400 popular websites of
China, Japan, Korea, and the US, as selected by Alexa [7].
We especially focus on Adobe Flash contents accepted by
popular web servers, often leading to a significant increase
of energy consumption. Based on the measurement results,
we describe the projected energy loss caused by Flash with
our own power-consumption rating model of websites. To
the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that reveals
how web contents impact energy consumption.
The remainder of this paper is organized as follows. In
Section 2, we describe our measurement environment and
the measurement results. We present energy projection with
a rating model of energy efficiency by focusing on Flash in
Section 3. Finally, we conclude this paper in Section 4.
