This happens because alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream through the small intestine, stomach and colon. Many side effects occur because of this. Cognition, memory retention, and the ability to process information slows. With your perception skills being compromised, your focus also becomes straight forward, which makes it less likely for the drunk driver to notice traffic signs, pedestrians and cars coming from the left or right. Your reaction time increases but your reflexes slow. Your immune system also becomes weaker because of the damage done to your organs. It is also less likely that the driver will be able to judge distances and speeds of other cars. All of these negative consequences work against you and your ability to drive.
