Another method I have experimented with is to make a small incision with a hacksaw blade, approximately half
way through the trunk. With the cut being smaller, when the bend is made it is not at such an acute angle, giving
a gentler bend, everything is the same as the previous method (wire and cut paste) with the exception of the way
the cut is performed.
I understand most trees would lend themselves to this method, any tree that can be grafted could be used but
the Swamp Cypress in the climate I live in lends itself to rapid development and rapid growth, if you’re going to
experiment do not try it on that 40 year old $1500.00 Black Pine you have just purchased. Pick something
you’re not going to be crying yourself to sleep about for the next couple of weeks if something goes wrong –
something you are willing to loose and have a go.
As can be seen the method of notching can produce some dramatic results and will give incredible bends and
twists in a trunk or branch that you may never have been able to create in any other technique and with no
visible scar
So do give NOTCHING a try, after you have done the notching all that will be required is to put it down the back
– water and fertiliser and watch the tree do the rest, the water and fertiliser will need to be done regardless but
with the notching in place you find a masterpiece in the making in place of that tree in a pot in a few years’ time.
