To illustrate how to calculate the national burden of malnutrition, we give a step-by-step
numerical example for child malnutrition in Nepal, a developing country in the WHO
SEAR D subregion. For a complete listing of countries by WHO subregions see Table
A1 in the annex. The disease burden is estimated in terms of the mortality and morbidity
associated with the principal causes of child death, i.e. diarrhoea, acute respiratory
infections, measles, malaria, and perinatal risk factors; and with protein-energy
malnutrition as a direct cause of death, and mortality associated with other infectious
diseases.
