Bacteria that were isolated consisted of both aerobic and
anaerobic organisms. Our study showed a predominance of
aerobic (74.6%) over anaerobic (25.4%) bacteria. The literature
shows a varied percentage of aerobic verses anaerobic bacteria
in similar studies over the decades.2,11e24 This may be due
to improvements in isolating and culturing methods of
anaerobic organisms.23 It may also be dependant on the
method used for specimen collection, as using the swab
method produces a higher aerobic yield
