The line graph shows changes in the price of platinum between 1960 and the present. Overall, there has been a huge increase in the price of the precious metal, with its price increasing almost 900% over the period.
For the first eight years shown in the graph, the price remained constant. Between 1960 and 1067, the price was unchanged at about $90 an ounce. In 1967 however there was a sharp increase, and the rice more than doubled to about $250 an ounce in 1968. Another period of little change followed from 1971 to 1977, with the price between $100 and $180, but then there was a very sharp increase in the price. It rose from $150 in 1977 to almost $700 in 1980, an increase of over 400% in just three years. After this peak, a period of sharp fluctuation followed from 1980 to 1990. Between 1990 and 2000 prices leveled off at about $400 an ounce. In the last five years however, the price has shot up again, rising from less than $400 an ounce in 2000 to almost $ 800 in 20005.
In conclusion, the price of platinum seems to be very volatile, with periods of rapid increase followed by periods of relative calm. Overall however, the trend is sharply upwards.
