In the initial two scenarios discussed above all harvested wood
is converted to paper products. These virgin paper products are
assumed to have a short half-life (1 year) before they are recycled
(50%), or sent to the landfill (50%). Once placed in the landfill,
paper is modeled as having a 10-year half-life. Under these
conditions both silvicultural systems will accumulate C in paper
products both as paper-in-use and as landfill residue. Due to the
greater growth and yield of wood for products in the intensively
managed stand the amount of C accumulating in products is also
greater (Fig. 1c). Carbon in products is 10 and 26 Mg C for the
low and high intensity systems, respectively, in 100 years just
prior to harvest of the fourth rotation.
