Recalled number fact. In a recalled number fact strategy the child obtained the
answer by remembering the appropriate multiplication or division combination.
Included in this category were derived facts, which are facts the children could not
readily recall but could calculate from a related recalled fact. For example, a child
might have reported finding 6 x 4 by remembering that 5 X 4 is 20 and then add-
ing 4 more. A child might also have said, “Six and six are twelve; twelve and twelve
are twenty-four.” This was classified as a derived fact rather than repeated addi-
tion because it did not involve the repeated adding of the same number
