1. INTRODUCTION
For thousands of years, wild edible mushrooms have been collected and consumed, and provide a major source of income and significant additions to the diets of poor people in developing countries. The use by humans of edible mushrooms 13,000 years ago in Andes has been confirmed through archeological records. The consumption of wild mushrooms in China was first reliably noted, more than 2,000 years ago. Edible mushrooms were gathered from forests in ancient Greek and Roman times and were highly valued, though more by high-ranking people than by peasants. The British colonial records in Africa contain little information about the local use of wild edible mushrooms, despite the fact that people throughout southern Africa have eaten them for centuries.
