Mangeldorf et al. (1996) have suggested that meta analysis
indicates contradictory findings regarding security
of attachment for low birthweight and very low birthweight
infants. One example of a surprising outcome is
Goldberg, Perrotta, Minde, and Corter’s (1986) study that
found more severely ill infants had an increased security of
attachment at one year of age (study infants had birth
weights over 1,500 grams and gestational ages over 30
weeks). The need for further research to examine maternal-infant
attachment in low-birth-weight and very-lowbirth-weight
infants is also apparent for the ELBW population.
