1. Assist the student in being able to locate his or her shoes. Memory cues such as a special place can be helpful.
2. Guide the student, physically where needed, in opening the shoes so that the feet can more easily fit in. In this exercise, as well as for the remainder of these tasks, it is important to face the shoes away (in the direction that the student would normally use) and not to present the shoes with the front pointed toward the student. Assist in pulling the tongue of the shoe upward.
3. Assist the student in placing his or her feet in each shoe as prepared in. Step 2.
4. Adjust ton, and tighten the laces around the eyelets, starting at the toe
5. If adhesive straps or similar devices arc to be used, teach that aspect to complete the lesson. If not, begin to teach tying by starting with grasping the ends of the laces and pulling up and out.
6. Have the student cross over the laces to form a single knot and pull the ends tight.
7. Form two loops from the free ends.
8. Using the process taught in Step 6, tie the loops created in Step 7 into another single knot.
9. Reduce the physical guidance used until the student needs only a total-task verbal prompt: "(Name), put on your shoes..
