In both IgE- and non-IgE-mediatedanaphylaxis, rapid release of inflammatory mediators from basophils and mast cells results in vasodilation, bronchoconstriction, and increased capillary permeability. The skin and the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and gastrointestinal systems can all be affected. Symptoms of anaphylactic shock include hypotension, tachycardia, difficulty breathing and swallowing due to airway inflammation or spasm, hives, skin flushing, dizziness, diarrhea, and weakness. Patients may also report experiencing a sense of impending death. Complications include respiratory distress, loss of consciousness, and cardiac arrest.
