Come Oct 18, and the charming man, Morrissey, will be performing in Bangkok.
It began with feverish anticipation as to whether the Ex-Smiths frontman would make a stop in Bangkok after he announced an international tour which is to start immediately after his headline performance at Riot Fest in Chicago this September.
It was later confirmed, and even though tickets went on sale earlier this month, it still seems surreal to Thai fans as this country has often in recent years been overlooked when bands from abroad are passing by the region. After shows in the East Coast, Morrissey will come to Asia and Australia before returning back to the United States.
Considered one of the most influential artists of all time, the 57-year-old started out as lead singer of The Smiths, an iconic band in the emergence of 80s indie rock. After four studio albums — The Smiths (1984), Meat Is Murder (1985), The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987) — the band split after short five years together. Since then, Morrissey has embarked on a solo career, producing 10 studio albums, from Viva Hate in 1988 up to World Peace Is None of Your Business in 2014.
It was not only with his witty and sardonic lyrics, speaking through a viewpoint of a melancholy and social outsider, but also his blunt opinions — favouring vegetarianism and animal rights and condemning royalty and prominent politicians — which have long garnered him no less than a cult following, cementing him as one of the most controversial and seminal of figures in popular music.
The concert will be held at Moonstar Studio, Lat Phrao 80. Needless to say, fans and vendors are advised not to bring meat anywhere near the venue as Moz, as he’s known by his fans, could suddenly call the whole thing off as soon as he smells just the whiff of it as he has done so many times before.
