Physicians and nurses should be provided with the knowl-
edge and skill required to care for dying patients and their
families. Palliative care concepts should be integrated along with
critical care concepts.
The nursing situations bringing about promoting peaceful
death in the ICUs could extend awareness of care at the end of
life as part of the Thai government national policies. This would
support the development of healthcare staff and the provision of
systems of care at the end of life. Some policy implications of this
study are:
1 There is a need to develop of models of promoting peaceful
death for terminally ill patients in hospitals, including those in
ICU settings.
2 Nurses and other health professionals should develop knowledge
and skills in the field of hospice and palliative care.
3 Interdisciplinary palliative care team should be created in all
hospitals.
4 Rights such as ‘the right to refuse treatment’ should be a
standard practice.
5 End-of-life care knowledge should be developed and
enhanced in accord with the Thai culture and society.
For research purposes, this study could provide the initial structure
into the processes of promoting peaceful death among dying
patients in ICUs.
