It is important that women are aware that they can have access to a clinical nurse specialists if they wish. Because many
women stated they were not aware they could see a clinical nurse specialists , a recommendation was made to all services stating that all women attending a breast screening assessment centre should be informed that they
have the opportunity to see a clinical nurse specialists , if available. This information could be provided in the recall
to assessment letter, the accompanying leaflet or a notice on display in the centre. The eight breast
screening services in the West Midlands have slightly different assessment invitation letters and leaflets.
Some refer to a clinical nurse specialists , and others do not. NHSBSP (2008b) guidance states that this should now be
in the recall letter, along with a telephone number. The precise role of a clinical nurse specialists is not explicitly stated.
