Community members plant the crops in the spring, maintain the site throughout the summer, and harvest the seeds in the autumn. After one or two harvests of sunflowers, full responsibility of the site is transitioned to the community. Past sites have become food gardens, rain gardens and playgrounds. In addition to reclaiming vacant land, GTECH also connects marginalized communities to environmentally beneficial economic opportunities through its green economy initiatives. GTECH’s partner organizations, ReFuel Pgh and Fossil Free Fuel, also collect waste nonhydrogenated vegetable oil to process into biodiesel for local use
