For some teachers, it is difficult for them to be the “guide on the side.” They are accustomed to being part of a direct instruction approach in which they we re the “sage on the stage.” Some teachers feel that they do not have as much control in their classroom if they are not in front lecturing. For inquiry learning to be successful in a classroom, “teachers must first evolve into confident, highly skilled [professionals] who are capable of relinquishing some control in instruction so that students are free to explore their knowledge” (Ward, 2001, p. 96).
