Three morphologically distinct cell types have been identified by electron microscopy; tall ciliated cells, non-ciliated secretory cells and wedge-shaped peg cells (William, 1979). The epithelium is arranged over the cervical rings and does not form coiled or tubular glands as in the uterus. The cyclic changes of the estrous cycle influence the appearance of the epithelium as in all the parts of the female reproductive tract (Dobson, 1988). The height of epithelium is maximal during estrus when mucoid secretory activity is also maximal.
