Abstract
Megaoesophagus or esophageal achalasia is an esophageal dilation with absent esophageal peristalsis due to the irreversible destruction of neurons in the myenteric plexus of the esophagus. The result is sticking of the bolus in the cardias and dysphagia. Currently, the treatment of achalasia is palliative and is based on paralysis or destruction of the muscle fibers of the lower esophageal sphincter, while in veterinary medicine the treatment of choice is often euthanasia.
In veterinary medicine, acupuncture has successfully provided both palliative and curative treatment of this entity. Study of megaesophagus according to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and presentation of a case of this entity could help to introduce acupuncture in the armamentarium used in these cases.
