6. Results and discussions
Overall, 134 expatriate responses were received from both
the postal and on-line surveys (response rate 19.1%). Seventy six
percent of the respondents were male and nearly fifty percent
(47.8%) were in their forties. Forty two percent of the expatriates
were from one of the European countries with 18.7% from the
United Kingdom. Seventy two percent of the expatriates were
non-Asians. Three quarters of them (75.4%) had been in the host
country for less than eighteen months. More than half (56%)
were first time expatriates, while 44% had been to at least two
other previous overseas assignments. All of the expatriates were
in the host country (HC) with at least their spouse or partner and
88.8% had their spouse and children or other dependant
accompanying them. More than half (62.7%) were partly fluent
in the HC native language. Table 4 gives a summary of the
demographic details of the respondents. Basic statistical
analyses were carried out to test the correlations between each
variable and these results are present in Table 5.
The original hypothesised model (see Fig. 1) was tested for
the purpose of examining the proposed relationships in this
study. Using theory-trimming techniques (Pedhazur, 1982), the
model was then re-tested in order to get a better fit through the
removal of non-significant hypothesised relationships. Table 6
provides the goodness-of-fit indices for both the original and
final models.
