DIAGNOSTIC TESTING
Initial laboratory studies are performed to evaluate for
an underlying etiology, identify other CVD risk factors,
and detect target organ damage. Table 3 summarizes
additional testing recommended by the NHBPEP for
children and adolescents with confirmed prehypertension
or hypertension.9 If there is a high degree of suspicion
that the child has secondary hypertension, further
targeted workup may be indicated, typically in conjunction
with subspecialist consultation.
