3.2. Aerobic reactor oxygen use and biomass concentrations
Although overall COD removal rates among reactor designs
indicate that sequence reactors are superior to aerobic or anaerobic
only systems, it is necessary to examine energy use in each system
to contrast designs for practical application. Therefore, the required
oxygen addition rate is important for contrasting aerobic
units, whether they are stand-alone units or the second stage of
a sequence system. Given all aerobic units were maintained with
DO between 4.5 and 6.6 mg/L, actual oxygen supply rates varied
among units, depending on influent COD levels and the operating
HRT.
