Swallowing involves a number of structures and their associated muscles, including the hyoid muscles, soft palate, pharynx, and larynx. The hyoid muscles are divided into a suprahyoid group and an infrahyoid group. When the suprahyoid muscles hold the hyoid bone in place from above, the infrahyoid muscles can elevate the larynx. To observe this effect, place your hand on your larynx and swallow.
