During the competitive season, in addition to football practice, players participated in a 2-day per week strength program with the focus on maintenance of power and strength. Lifts included multijoint ground-based exercises, such as Olympic lift variations, squats, pushes, presses, and pulls. The intensity of weeks 1 through 4 focused on basic adaptation, 60–72.5% of 1 lift max (1LM), weeks 5 through 8 emphasized basic strength at 70–80% 1 LM, weeks 9 through 12 focused on maximal strength maintenance 75–85% 1 LM, and weeks 13–17 emphasized basic strength and power maintenance 40–75% 1 LM with some bands and accommodative resistance.
