The main outcome measure was incidence of (dentinal level) caries expe-
rience on treated occlusal surfaces of molars and premolars. Filled and
missing surfaces were scored as decayed, so increment was defined as
change in decayed, missing, or filled surfaces (ΔDMFS). The main out-
come then was presence or absence of caries incidence (dichotomous).
Risk ratios (relative risk = RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were
the main way the results were reported. These were defined as comparing
caries incidence rates in the sealant group (or sealed teeth) versus varnish
group (or varnished teeth), so lower relative risks favored sealants.
