Gunung Walat Educational Forest (GWEF) is a state forest area which is managed by
the Faculty of Forestry, Bogor Agricultural University for the purpose of education and
research. The forest is located in Sukabumi District, West Java Province about 60 km from
the university and about 120 km from Jakarta.
Area of GWEF is about 350 ha. Its vegetation is dominated by Agathis loranthifolia
and Pinus merkusii which is planted in monoculture system in the 1970-s by students of
Faculty of Forestry, Bogor Agricultural University as part of their practicum.
In 2002 an agroforestry system was developed and established in the forest area of
GWEF. The project was conducted by a research team from Faculty of Forestry, Bogor
Agricultural University in collaboration with the GWEF management and supported by
Korean Government through ASEAN-Korea Environmental Cooperation Project (AKECOP).
There were three designs of agrofrestry developed in the GWEF (Figure 1 & 2) which
