What is Problem-Based Learning (PBL)?
Problem-based learning is a teaching or training method characterized by the use of
"real world" problems as a context for individuals to learn critical thinking and problem
solving skills and acquire knowledge. It involves both knowing and doing.
“Real world problems don’t come neatly packaged. Data is rarely immediately
available and there are always many different perspectives on each problem.
Learning to grapple with such problems is an important aim of PBL.” 1
PBL can be applied to an individual or to a group of individuals. It can be applied to a
classroom setting or any type of training program. It can even be used for employee
development and even prepare someone for a new assignment or a promotion.
