Myanmar traditional music has freedom to improvise, freedom from being notebound, and freedom of variations. There are three theorise on the origin of Myanmar music. The first theory states that Myanmar people were traditional farmers and the music was created to accompany their agricultural activities. The second theory states that Myanmar people worshiped nats ( spirits ) befrore Buddha arrived and the music was part of the ritual to propitiate the nats. The third theory ststes that when Buddhism spread throughout the country originating from Thaton and Hanthawady, the devotees paid homage by holding pagoda festivals. Maha-gita is the oldest type of Myanmar traditional music composed during the times of Myanmar Kingdoms. They are all over a century old now. According to what is wrriten in Gita Withawdani , there are basically 459 songs. And according to the book Shwe Nan Then Maha Gita Paung Ctoke, there are totally 793 songs.
