Leaf rolling (LR) and leaf drying (LD) were recorded twice at
weekly intervals (LR1, LR2; LD1, LD2) after the second stress
cycle following the visual scoring (0–9) recommended in the
‘‘Standard evaluation system for rice’’ (IRRI, 1996).
Panicle exsertion was measured at maturity on the sample
used to measure HI. The harvested panicles were separated
into five groups (N1 = no. of panicles with 100% exsertion,
N2 = no. of panicles with 99–75% exsertion, N3 = no. of
panicles with 74–50% exsertion, N4 = no. of panicles with 49–
25% exsertion, N5 = no. of panicles with less than 25%
exsertion) and the percent panicle exsertion (PE%) was
calculated as
