At three years, the people in the intervention group
had a higher mean functional status than those in the
control group (Table 2). The detailed results of a hierarchical analysis are shown in Table 3. With independence as the reference state, the odds of being dependent
on assistance in the basic activities of daily living at
three years were significantly lower in the intervention
group than in the control group (adjusted odds ratio,
0.4; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.2 to 0.8; P0.02;
P0.03 for the unadjusted odds ratio). The odds of being dependent on assistance only for the instrumentalactivities of daily living were similar
in the two groups (odds ratio, 1.1; 95
percent confidence interval, 0.6 to
2.0; P0.8).
