From a theoretical perspective, specifically, the legitimacy theory (Patten, 2002;
Suchman, 1995), it appears that the lack of a severe threat to the social legitimacy of the
hotel chains account for the limited levels of CSR disclosures. Thus, unlike in the
western context in general, Zimbabwe’s four hotel chains appear not to face as much
stakeholder pressures to provide detailed and transparent representations of their CSR
activities on websites, annual reports and mission statements. The above analysis,
lends some credence to the contention by several researchers (e.g. Chapple and Moon,
2005) that the exact form of CSR is path-dependent, especially in relation to multinational companies. Thus, for instance, whilst Holiday Inn Express Canterbury in
UK, provided its green policy on its website, Holiday Inn affiliated properties in
Zimbabwe did not.
