Sucralose is an artificial sweetener that is approximately 600
times sweeter than sucrose and is widely used as a food additive
(Mawhinney et al., 2011). The concentration of sucralose was highly
variable in the samples analyzed, ranging from less than the
detection limit to 621000 ng L1. This may provide an indication
of the age of waste present in the landfill leachate as sucralose
was introduced in many Western nations in the 1990s. At some
sites the concentration of sucralose was higher than reported in
USA drinking water sources (47–2900 ng L1) (Mawhinney et al.,
2011).
