Current state and trends
The Great Barrier Reef continues to be exposed to increased levels of sediments, nutrients and pesticides, In particular, there are significant effects in inshore ares close to developed coasts, such as mangrove recovery and increased algae on coral reefs.
Sediments, nutrients, pesticides and other pollutants entering the Region in land-based run-off remain key issues for the Region.
The Reef Water Quality Protection Plan and annual report cards measure changes and progress to improving water quality in the Great Barrier Reef.
