Dear Parents and Guardians,
As the new Head of the Secondary School I am delighted to be joining such a prestigious school as Amnuay Silpa School. In the very short time I have been here, I have found the student body to be extremely welcoming and friendly. In visiting classrooms and observing different classes I can see how hardworking the students are and that they are blessed with such a dedicated group of Thai and overseas teachers.
I have over 30 years of UK and international education, having worked in the UK, Indonesia, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, most recently spending 5 years as Head of Secondary in a bi-lingual school in Kazakhstan. I am looking forward to this new opportunity but also looking forward to returning to a region which I know and have come to love. The friendliness, politeness and welcoming spirit of the Thai people is world renowned and I very much look forward to working with you and your children.
By sending your child to this school you are showing a commitment to your child receiving the best educational practice in Thailand within a bi-lingual framework. Amnuay Silpa is the leading bi-lingual Thinking School in Thailand. What does this mean? The school has adopted the best modern educational practice which promotes critical thinking skills. That is, students take more control of their own learning, understand the importance of assessment and know how to question knowledge and information and not simply accept what they are told. Students at ANS are at least bi-lingual in Thai and English and some are even able to speak in a third language or more. Following my attendance at a recent conference with businessmen in London, these are skills that employers are looking for when students join their companies in order to develop the economies of the 21st Century. Employers are looking for potential employees who can apply information and solve problems independently. By adopting the ‘Thinking School’ approach we are developing these skills in your children.
The success of the teaching and learning methodologies practiced in Amnuay Silpa School is reflected in the recent outstanding set of IGCSE results which ANS students achieved in 2013. The number of students gaining exam passes at A* to C has risen from 79% in 2012 to 91% in 2013 and I want to congratulate all our IGCSE students and their teachers for reaching such a high level of success. A number of subjects achieved well above the world average.
However, examinations is only part of your child’s educational experience and I have been receiving very positive reports of the fields trips which have recently taken place. Being active outside the classroom is a very important part of your child’s education. Field trips encourage team building and the development of leadership skills and I want to thank all the teachers who have organized these events.
Similarly I also want to thank Mr Weerwat Pattarakajee who took eight ANS students to participate in the String Combo Band Contest of the Asoka Art and Music Festival on the 25th August. I look forward to hearing of ANS students participating in many more cultural events over the course of the year.
In the next few weeks we will be setting up a new ANS Students Council in which representatives of each year group will be elected by their fellow year group members and I look forward to their help and hearing their suggestions in how we can improve our school.
I welcome the opportunity of meeting you over the course of the year and would like to thank everyone who have given me help and support as a newcomer to Amnuay Silpa School.
