In the Tsumekizaki Geosite, visitors can enjoy the view of strata formed in the volcanic activity of the period when Izu was a submarine volcano, and the columnar joints formed when the magma, which penetrated into the underground strata, was cooling down and solidifying.
The attractions of the Shimoda Port Geosite are the landscape and the culture of the town, which has for a long time been a port, as the location is blessed with a large bay that is quite rare for Izu, and the strata formed by volcanic products of the submarine volcano that created the bay.
In the Kisami and Touji Geosite, volcanic products of submarine volcanoes are widely distributed all over the coast. There are also a number of sea caves in various places formed by erosion of the rocks by the waves, and in these caves there are places where the fossiliferous strata, proofs of the ancient upheaval, are clinging to the walls.
