Forty-two specimens of S. cephalus (average total length 30.9 ±
0.8 cm, mean ± standard error S.E., range 22–43 cm) were sampled
by electrofishing fromthe River Tiber in the Province of Perugia, Central
Italy. The chubwere anaesthetisedwith a lethal dose ofMS222 (tricaine
methanesulphonate, Sandoz), and then spinal cord severed. The gills
were then screened for ectoparasites before each fish dissection.
