Limitations
The study has limitations that may restrict it from being generalized. The study was
conducted in an economically diverse suburban school, and the classroom in which the study
will be completed has a wide range of student reading levels. If this study were to be replicated, the student sample itself could be a factor, as every child and his or her opinions, interests, and
needs differ.
This study was conducted using literature circles to foster discussion of the texts. This
format could influence the affect and motivation of the students reading the graphic novels.
Additionally, the students’ past experiences and levels of comfort with literature circles could
also play a role in the execution of the study.
Another limitation involves the texts themselves. As a great number of graphic novels
and their traditional novel counterparts are needed, future studies may need to involve different
texts, or researchers may have difficulty in selecting the same texts used in this study.
The reading levels of student participants were not assessed prior to the beginning of the
study. This could affect the outcome if the students’ reading levels are below the levels of the
graphic novels, as the students will not be able to comprehend the texts. This situation presents
the possibility of causing skewed results in the study’s data.
