The opportunities for the applications of computer technology seemed limitless. However, during the mid 1990s, reports of an inherent and perhaps fatal flaw in a broad spectrum of these systems began to surface. Some computer experts began speculating that many systems would produce unpredictable results and some might catastrophically fail as the world passed from the year 1999 to the year 2000. These failures would occur because many systems were not capable of recognizing that the year 2000 came after the year 1999. For example, when asked to determine the difference between the years 2000 and 1999, systems might calculate the difference between “00” from “99” yielding an erroneous result of “-99” (rather than the correct answer of “1”).
