Consumer prices in Fiji rose 5.6 percent from a year earlier in September of 2016, following a 5.9 percent increase in August. Prices went up at a slower pace for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (+7.0 percent from +9.8 percent in the prior month) and clothing and footwear (+0.4 percent from +0.8 percent). Cost increased more than in a month earlier for: alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics (+42.8 percent from +37.4 percent) and restaurants and hotels (+3.8 percent from +3.7 percent). Inflation was steady for education (+9.0 percent). In contrast, prices fell for: housing and utilities (-4.7 percent from -4.7 percent), furnishing, household equipment and maintenance (-0.5 percent from -0.8 percent), transport (-4.3 percent from -4.2 percent), communication (-1.5 percent from -1.5 percent), recreation and culture (-0.3 percent from -0.2 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (-0.7 percent from -0.9 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.1 percent.
