1. Introduction
A major aim of empirical research is to observe and describe phenomena, to explain
causes and effects of these phenomena, and to predict future developments and actions.
Researchers attempt to gain as much relevant data as possible in order to solve problems
or to support decision-making processes. The choice of an appropriate analysis method
depends largely on the complexity of the research question and the capability of a data
set or method to answer the research question. Researchers integrate different methods
when they feel the need to unfold the complex relationships in the topic of study (see e.g.
mixed-methods approaches or method triangulation).
