The PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING AND TRAINING in the Student Guide will help us become better trainers. A key distinction exists between teaching and facilitating learning. Traditional education uses instructive-style learning sessions or lectures to teach participants. The instructor is the “teller” of information. Facilitating learning gets participants involved and helps adults assume responsibility for their own learning. Facilitative methods obtain a high level of participation among learners and often leverage questioning techniques, solicitation of ideas, brainstorming, and small-group discussions to involve participants in the learning process. Using these principles to enhance the learning and skill-building aspects of your training will help agents learn more effectively and improve their chances of success.
Review and discuss each principle. Give some examples of each so the principle comes alive for the student.
