In essence, GIS is a database management system for geographically-referenced data. GIS
databases are typically arranged in ‘levels’ where each level deals with a different type of
information (e.g., demographic data, socio-economic data, land use data, etc.). All levels have a
common set of coordinates. In some instances, it may be possible to ‘drape’ GIS ‘data’ over
digital terrain elevation data.
