The movement to restore ancient Hindu principles in Indian society has also favored the revival of brahmin and upper-class supremacy.
Previously, during India’s early decades of independence (since 1947), the government had initiated public programs to raise the status of groups that had been oppressed by higher-caste groups.
These social programs to reverse discrimination against lower castes are still in place in India. They are known as the “reservations” system. But many upper-caste Hindus resent this official assistance for lower castes because they feel disadvantaged because of it.
