Volcker in a speech in Hongkong stated: "An exchange-rate system that produces a 60 per cent swing in the yen/dollar rate over a period of 18 months cannot reflect the fundamentals in any sensible sense." Well, the Indonesian rupiah moved 600 per cent in the space of five months. What indeed is the worth of a nation if suddenly someone can devalue and even bankrupt it?
