Adsorption is widely used for the removal of contaminants from
wastewaters. The design and efficient operation of adsorption
processes require equilibrium adsorption data. The equilibrium
isotherm plays an important role to predict modelling for analysis
and design of adsorption systems [21–23]. Various types of
adsorbent for dye removal from synthetic solution and textile
wastewater have been used and reviewed by different authors [24–
30]. Nevertheless, the EAB is utilized for the adsorption of SR-BA
and SBB-A direct dyes and agricultural based adsorbents are cheap,
efficient and available round the year. Eucalyptus is the general
name of the Myrtaceae Eucalyptus species, originated in Australia
and nearby islands. Because of its fast-growing, short rotation,
desiccation-tolerant, drought-tolerant, adaptable, high economic
benefits, it is known as one of the world's three major fast-growing
tree species, which are widely spread in tropical and subtropical
regions [31]. Eucalyptus species were introduced in Pakistan in the
early 20th century and millions of hectares were planted in all
parts of the country. Considerable research has been done to
characterize and evaluate different traits affecting biomass
production and yield of Eucalyptus since it has greater access to
deep water level than other deciduous species and is grown widely
to reduce the water level [32]. The use of inexpensive adsorbents
based on agricultural waste is preffered since waste is utilized for waste remediation. Using EAB, the removal of SR-BA and SBB-A
from wastewater has not been reported previously.
Therefore, the objectives of present study were to evaluate the
EAB feasibility for the removal of SR-BA and SBB-A from aqueous
media. The effects of different process variables (pH, adsorbent
dosage, initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature and
salt concentration) on the adsorption process were investigated
and the conditions optimized for dyes removal from synthetic
solution were employed for the adsorption of dyes from textile
effluents using EAB. The equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamics
studies were employed to understand the adsorption mechanism
of both dyes onto EAB.
