The point about ability and resources is an obvious one; it is often unrealistic, for example, to ask for a formal essay from many students.Initially it may be best to ask them for a few notes, composed fairly casually but beginning the process of getting pen to paper. These can be on the subject matter of a book, on a visit to an exhibition, on a film, television programme or a substantial newspaper article. It is often appropriate to suggest that students keep a notebook to record class work. As with reading, guidance in note-taking will usually be helpful.
