Various practical methods of FE inductance calculation
have been developed using these principles [4]-[ 91. The
self-inductance of a stator winding can be evaluated by
energizing only that individual winding 141-[5]. The selfinductance
of a held winding will then be determined by
another FE solution with only the field winding excited.
For salient-pole machines, special rotor positions must be
arranged to compute direct-axis and quadrature-axis inductances
[4]. For permanent magnet synchronous machines,
the permanent magnets must be set at zero magnetization
in order to calculate the self- and mutual
inductances of the stator windings. The inductances can
be calculated from magnetic energy [4] or from flux linkage
[5]. However, these special FE solutions that are designed
exclusively for inductance calculations cannot be
used to evaluate other machine parameters such as torque.
