The main courtroom in the federal building was full. Adam sat with
Garner Goodman. The Attorney General, Roxburgh, sat at the
state’s table with half a dozen assistants. Two rows behind them sat
the governor. The rest of the crowd was mainly reporters — no
cameras were allowed. There were some law students, other lawyers,
and members of the public. In the back row sat Rollie Wedge.
Everyone stood as Slattery made his entrance. “Be seated,” he
said into his microphone. He explained the purpose of the
hearing. He was not in the mood for long arguments and
pointless questions, he told the lawyers.
