The Occupy Sandy New Jersey group is calling on all people of good...[Occupy Sandy New Jersey Transportation Volunteers];’ ‘If you have a car or truck and want to help transport donated goods & volunteers, link in by texting “@osdrivers” to 23559’. These messages were spread over social media ,including Twitter and Facebook, to create, promote and organize the relief effort. With the real-time communication of social media, volunteers were informed about where relief effort was needed and they would meet and provide help in a specific area; they were also able to donate goods on Amazon.com using a ‘wedding registry’ for relief goods. Although this movement was a social movement that was neither planned nor expected, it was considered to be a grassroots network which has a horizontal structure and the primary means of attracting and mobilizing volunteers through social media (Ambinder et al., 2013).
