The objective of this study is to compare the refusal strategies between men and women. This study also focused on studying variable related to the gender. The data were collected by a discourse completion test (DCT) completed by 50 participants, including 25 men students and 25 women students of Special English major from Kasetsart University Kamphangsaen Campus.
The findings reveal that the participants employed two refusal strategies. It is direct and indirect refusal strategies in accordance with Brown and Levinson’s framework. The direct refusal strategies are included without redressive action, positive politeness, and negative politeness. The indirect refusal strategies is included off record. In addition, when comparing between men and women, it is found that both men and women employed indirect refusal strategies most. Especially women employ more indirect refusal strategies than men slightly.
